Lync 2013 & Skype for Business comparision

1. VIS Server role for improved interoperability with third-party video teleconferencing systems.
VIS currently can be deployed ONLY as a Standalone pool, it cannot be collocated with other Skype For Business roles.
The Integration between both platforms (Cisco and MS) are done by using SIP-Trunk.

2. The Rate My Call feature lets Skype for Business Server 2015 administrators collect call data.
 3. Enhanced meeting experiences, Meeting functionality available on the desktop is now available to mobile users as well.

4. Improved patching and upgrade processes, Invoke-CsComputerFailOver/failback

5. Front End pool cold start capability, entire Front End pool. When you use the new Start-CsPool cmdlet, it checks pre-requisites for all the Front End Servers in the pool, then attempts to start each server. If it encounters any problems, it diagnoses them and alerts you with details and workarounds.
 6. SQL Server AlwaysOn support
 7. centralized logging and troubleshooting, ClsAgent.exe
 8. Video Based Screen Sharing (It's a client side functionality ?)

9. Skype Directory Search
 10. Call Quality Dashboard

Licensing for Skype for Business Server
For on-prem versions, Licensing for Skype for Business Server stays the same as Lync Server 2013.
  • Each Front End server requires a server license.
  • Each user (or device) requires a standard CAL.
  • Add an Enterprise CAL for conferencing & desktop sharing, a Plus CAL for voice & call management, or both.
  • Client licenses are required for using the Skype for Business client. (These are included in Office 2013 Professional Plus, too.)
  • You’ll find a Licensing Guide on the Skype for Business IT Pros page.

What is call via work ?

In skype for Business this is a new feature. It integrates the existing PBX with SKB servers.
And it does not requires any SIP CSTA server. It uses the UC Web API to act as back to back user agent.
Call via Work (CvW) is the next generation and replacement for Remote Call Control (RCC).
RCC is far more functional than Call via Work but RCC relied on additional software in the form of a SIP/CSTA server.

Call via Work on the other hand does not rely on any additional servers. It utilizes Enterprise Voice functionality to “bridge” two calls together

Suppose if you have an existing desk phone and you wish to utilize it for making calls via the skype client.
This is the feature in which you can continue to do IM, Presence, sharing, etc from your
skype client. But the audio calls will be placed by skype client but it will go via the existing deskphone like cisco, etc.

When you can call any PSTN number from your Skype client, one leg of the call will first ring your desk phone and when you receive the call  then the other leg will ring the called number and then it will merge the call.

This is call via work. and in your skype client you will see 2 participants. This is how in Lync 2010 mobile clients used
to set up the PSTN calls.
